As most people know that it is tradition for the groom not to see his bride in her dress before the wedding day as it is believed to be bad luck. What most people do not know is the history behind this tradition. When arranged marriages were custom the bride and groom actually did not see or meet each other prior to the wedding day. The ceremony was the symbol of a business deal between two families. The reason the two would not see one another before the wedding is to ensure that the groom would not back out, which is why the bride also traditionally wore a veil in case he was not attracted to her. Not the most romantic tradition, but a tradition that has been around for as long as we can remember.
Fast forward to today and a new wedding trend is surfacing, “The first look.” If you are engaged and have been meeting with vendors this is something that you may have already been asked if you plan on doing. So what exactly is a first look? The first look is where the bride and groom will have a private meeting and a photographer will be there to capture the reactions to seeing one another for the first time on their wedding day. So what is the big deal with doing a first look and why should you break tradition and do it?
1. It Calms the Nerves
In the midst of all the wedding day chaos and months leading up to your wedding day it can make the two of you very nervous. Having a first look allows for everything to slow down and you and your significant other to have a quiet, intimate moment. You will have peace of mind that your future husband or wife is there for you and will help calm your nerves.
