Charleston is one of those places where coastal weddings just feel natural. With the marshes, beaches, waterfront views, palm trees, and sprawling oak trees, there’s no shortage of Charleston coastal wedding ideas to pull from. And what I love most is that a coastal wedding doesn’t have to look one specific way. It can be colorful and playful, timeless and elegant, or somewhere in between. I’ve photographed so many different versions of coastal weddings throughout Charleston, and each one has had its own take on the setting.

Choosing a Coastal Charleston Wedding Venue
One of the first decisions you’ll make is where to get married, and Charleston gives you plenty of options when it comes to a coastal setting. Your wedding can take you outside of downtown for a beachfront celebration on Kiawah Island or Isle of Palms, or you can choose a venue overlooking the marsh with a long dock stretching out over the water.
Some beautiful options include Lowndes Grove, The Island House, Creek Club at I’On, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, and Daniel Island Club. Each has its own look and feel, which is part of what makes planning a coastal wedding here so much fun. You don’t necessarily need a beach to create that relaxed Lowcountry atmosphere. Sometimes a marsh view, a dock, or palm trees in the background is all you need.
Coastal Wedding Color Palettes
Before you start making decisions about attire, flowers, and decor, choosing a color palette is usually one of the first details to consider. And this is an area where I’ve seen my couples have a lot of fun.
Blue is definitely a favorite at Charleston weddings, especially softer shades that work beautifully against the water and greenery. I’ve also photographed weddings that mix different shades of blue and green, which feels very natural in a coastal setting.
But coastal certainly doesn’t have to mean blue and white. One of my favorite summer palettes included soft pastel shades of pink, orange, yellow, green, and blue. The combination was colorful without feeling overwhelming and fit the season and setting so beautifully. When looking for Charleston coastal wedding ideas, don’t be afraid to pull colors from the landscape while still making the palette feel like you.
Coastal Wedding Flowers and Decorations
Flowers are another easy way to bring some of that coastal feeling into the day. Hydrangeas are always beautiful, along with white and cream roses, ranunculus, and plenty of greenery. I especially love loose, garden-style arrangements with movement, rather than bouquets and centerpieces that feel too structured.
Your decor is also a great place to add personality. I’ve photographed everything from patterned linens and rattan chargers to woven lanterns and floral arrangements displayed in rattan baskets. Oyster shells are another detail I see couples incorporate in really beautiful ways. They can become part of a seating display or even be hand-lettered with each guest’s name and placed at their seat.
Smaller details can be just as meaningful. A little sailboat personalized with the couple’s last name sitting on the bar or a watercolor of Charleston or the wedding venue on the invitation suite can tie everything together.
Coastal decor doesn’t have to feel themed or overdone. Some of my favorite weddings use just a few thoughtful details and let the setting do the rest.
Coastal Wedding Attire
Wedding attire is another chance to have a little fun with the coastal setting, especially for the wedding party. I’ve photographed bridesmaids in mismatched colors, patterns, fabrics, and textures, and I love how much personality that can add to photos. For the guys, a classic black tux or suit absolutely works for a coastal wedding, especially if you’re planning a more formal celebration. But there are other options, too. A white jacket with black pants creates a really polished look, while tan, neutral, or even light blue linen suits can work beautifully for a more relaxed wedding.
Charleston Coastal Ceremony Ideas
Your ceremony is one of the best opportunities to really let your venue shine. I’ve photographed ceremonies facing the water, overlooking the marsh, and tucked beneath Charleston’s oak trees with glimpses of the water beyond.
You don’t need to add a lot when the backdrop is already beautiful. Florals around the ceremony space, a simple arbor, or a few thoughtful details can complement the landscape without competing with it. Sometimes keeping the ceremony design simple gives your guests the chance to take in exactly where they are.
Coastal Wedding Reception Inspiration
Once the ceremony is over, there are so many ways to carry that atmosphere into the rest of the celebration. Waterfront cocktail hours are always beautiful, especially as the light softens later in the day.
And I will always love a sailcloth tent. They feel elegant while still keeping the reception connected to the outdoors. Add string lights, beautiful tablescapes, and water views, and you have a reception that feels special without losing the relaxed quality that makes Charleston coastal weddings so beautiful.
Making the Charleston Scenery Part of Your Wedding Photos
As a Charleston wedding photographer, this is one of my favorite parts of a coastal wedding day. There is so much variety here, and I love finding ways to include the surrounding landscape in my couples’ photos.
That might mean portraits beneath the oak trees, walking along the beach as the sun begins to set, or stepping out onto a dock for a few quiet minutes together. Docks are one of my favorite places to photograph couples, especially when I can bring out my drone and capture you surrounded by the water and marsh from above.
Those wider photographs really show the beauty of the Lowcountry and give you images that capture not only the two of you, but also the place where you chose to get married.

As you start gathering Charleston coastal wedding ideas, my biggest advice is to choose a venue you genuinely love and let that setting inspire you rather than feeling like it has to dictate every decision.
Pull in the colors you love. Choose a few coastal details that feel natural to you. Play into the things that make your venue special, whether that’s the marsh, beach, oak trees, or waterfront views. Your wedding can feel unmistakably Charleston without including a coastal element in every single detail.
