Engagement sessions are one of my favorite parts of the wedding experience I offer couples! It’s important to me that I make the planning part of your engagement photos as easy as possible. For this reason, I provide tips and tricks to all my couples regarding what to wear. Even if you aren’t an Emma Lili couple, these outfit ideas will help you with your Charleston engagement photos. In that regard, let’s dive into all the Engagement Session Outfit Ideas from a Charleston Engagement Photographer!
As a pro tip, I always recommend couples wear one casual and one formal outfit. Doing so gives an excellent variety for your final gallery! It’s also essential that both of you coordinate outfits instead of matching!
I believe there’s no such thing as too dressed up! Choosing a long, flowy dress or skirt always looks amazing on camera! This allows for movement in photos and almost creates the impression that you are wearing your wedding dress. I do recommend avoiding pants and shorts for your session. So why not say yes to a dress (or two!)
Choosing a cute shorter-length dress can also work for your more casual outfit! Think about what you would wear on a date night when you go for a nice dinner. A sun dress or cocktail dress would work perfectly. Your engagement photos should reflect you, so wear something comfortable that makes you feel like yourself! I’d hate to see you unhappy with your outfit because you’re uncomfortable with it.
When it’s time to choose a color scheme for what you’re thinking, try to choose something that is a lighter and more muted tone. If you prefer bright colors or a bold pattern, sometimes it can distract from your face. As you’re in Charleston, you may be heading to the beach for some photos, so a softer color palette works well.
Shopping for a new outfit for your photos can be fun, but where should you look? Great question! I have created an Amazon storefront that includes several of my favorite outfits you can easily buy! Click here to see everything I love on there! Morning Lavender is such a cute online boutique that always has great options. Get 10% off your morning Lavender order by clicking here! Lulus is another online boutique where you can never go wrong with shopping there. They are always keeping up with the trends and seasons. Click here to access my discount code! If you’re not looking to add a permanent piece to your closet but still want something new, I recommend looking at Rent the Runway. Many brides love this concept because it’s easy to send the outfits back once the session ends!
It’s no secret that men look most handsome when wearing a well-tailored suit! When picking out the right suit, a solid color will look best. Shades of gray or navy will most likely complement women’s outfits. A patterned suit like plaid or pinstripes can be distractive and look odd in the picture.
There’s also nothing wrong with pairing a suit or sport coat with different colors of pants. It can be a fun twist, yet it still looks classy.
Be sure to wear close-toed shoes. Wearing any other shoe can distract the eye and take the attention off your face! When wearing a suit, pair it with some great details. Tie vs. bowtie, pocket square, or tip clip is some examples of details you can choose. If you’re wearing two different suites, you can always do two different looks! Maybe with the first, you wear a bowtie and pair it with a tie for the second suit.
At the end of the day, the memories captured during your engagement session are what’s most important! While yes, you want to look nice and make sure your outfits look on point, my most significant piece of advice is to have fun and be yourselves. We will laugh a lot throughout the session, so when you can act like how you usually would, I can get some fantastic photos! I hope that this engagement session outfit ideas post helps you when you think of what to wear.
